Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust staining on the chimney crown or chase cover. DuraFlex caps use stainless mesh and a galvanized or stainless base, but the draw-band collar is often the failure point. When the collar corrodes at the seam, water tracks down the liner and exits at the crown edge, leaving orange streaks that read as masonry damage but trace straight to the cap.
• Wind noise or visible lift during storms. The draw-band or storm-strap loosens as the liner expands and contracts through freeze-thaw cycles. Crystal Lake’s temperature swings, especially the late-winter thaws followed by hard freezes, work the band more aggressively than downstate installs. A cap that lifts even half an inch is a cap that will lift fully.
• Debris, nests, or visible flue opening from the ground. Mesh failure or cap displacement removes the spark arrestor and animal barrier. Squirrels in Crystal Lake’s older neighborhoods near Three Oaks Recreation Area are persistent; they will enter a 6-inch flue if the mesh is torn or the cap is askew.
• Smoke spillage or draft reversal on startup. A cap that has shifted or collapsed partially over the flue opening restricts exhaust flow. The backpressure shows up as smoke rolling out the firebox door or a persistent smoky smell in the room above the fireplace.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: from the ground with binoculars, confirm the cap is centered and the mesh is intact. If you have roof access and a stable ladder, check the draw-band tightness by hand. Do not attempt to tighten or replace the band if the chimney is more than a single story, if the roof pitch exceeds 6:12, or if you are working within 10 feet of any overhead electrical service. The band requires a specific torque; overtightened, it dimples the liner and creates a creosote trap. Undertightened, it loosens inside a month.

We do not recommend homeowner cap installation on DuraFlex systems. The liner is flexible by design; without proper support at the top, the cap weight can kink the termination. We see this most often on 6-inch and 8-inch diameters where the homeowner used a generic cap with a standard base that does not distribute load across the DuraFlex collar.
