• Rust stains on the chimney breast or siding. Galvanized Famco caps in the GC- series typically show surface rust at year 7-9 in McHenry County’s freeze-thaw cycle. There’s safe checking, and then there’s the work itself.

You can verify the model from ground level with binoculars: look for the Famco stamp on the skirt, check if the mesh is intact, confirm the cap sits level. If it’s accessible and you’re comfortable on a ladder, measuring the flue tile outer dimension gives you the size we need when you call.

We don’t recommend homeowner installation. The roof pitch on most Crystal Lake colonials and split-levels puts you at height with a heavy metal object in wind. More critically, a cap seated wrong - overhanging the flue tile unevenly, hardware under-torqued, sealant skipped - channels water into the flue instead of away from it.
