There’s one safe check you can do from the firebox: shine a flashlight up the flue and look for the plate position while someone works the handle. If you see the plate move freely and seat flat, the mechanism is probably fine and the issue is elsewhere. But if the plate is stuck, corroded, or you can’t see it clearly, stop there.

Removing a stuck Famco damper plate requires working at height in the firebox, often with a pry bar against cast iron that can crack unpredictably. The spindle spring on some E-series units is under tension, and a slipped tool can send metal into your face or damage the smoke chamber above. We don’t recommend it.
